“I was expecting more than this,” the man complained, counting the bills in his hand.

“And I was expecting more than a bungled mess.”

“Wasn’t my fault she didn’t ride out like she usually does. Hell, she’d been holed up in the house for a week. I was lucky she even saddled the horse.”

“Some luck. Now she’s onto us.”

The first man scratched his whiskers on his face. “I don’t think so. They’re trying to keep her from finding out it wasn’t an accident.”

“How do you know that?”

“Heard Pete telling that cripple wife of his.”

The second man digested this information. “Then it’s even more important to keep her away from McIntire.”

“Now, that might be pretty hard.”

The other man’s voice was hard. “Why is that?”

“Saw ’em last night outside the big house. The way they was kissing…” The first man chuckled obscenely.

The second man nearly broke the quirt he held in his gloved hand. “Find out what’ll break that up and do it. Now. Otherwise we’ll have to get rid of him, too.”

“There’s no need to get so het up.”

“Don’t be a fool. I’ve waited far too long for this already. I won’t have everything ruined now.”

The first man responded to his companion’s anger. “Sure. You can count on me.”

“I’d better, or you’ll end up like old man Whitaker.”
